# Cookie Control cookie banner: speed and features on Astro

Script-based cookie consent tool from Civic UK.

- Vendor: Civic
- Website: https://www.civicuk.com
- Version tested: v9, hosted
- Framework: Astro

We measured other CMPs on Next.js only, so on Astro this comparison uses Cookie Control’s other integrations. [Cookie Control on Next.js](https://cookiebench.com/benchmarks/cookie-control.md).

## Desktop

Desktop profile: 1365 × 768 · No CPU slowdown · 12.5 MB/s, no added latency.

In our tests with its Astro integration, Cookie Control showed its cookie banner in a median 402 ms on desktop. It added no measurable delay to the main content. Accept responded in 16 ms and Reject in 16 ms. It held trackers back in 3 of 4 consent checks. We could not confirm the other check.

On an emulated mid-tier phone, the banner took 1.94 s. Per vendor docs, Cookie Control supports IAB TCF, Google Consent Mode v2, Google CMP certification and Global Privacy Control. We could not confirm IAB GPP.

| Question | Answer | How it compares | Context |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| How fast does the banner appear? | 402 ms | 6th fastest of 6 Cookie Control integrations | Median of 15 visits. |
| Does it slow the page down? | No measurable change | No measurable delay, like 5 of the other 5 Cookie Control integrations | Main content painted as fast as on the same page without a consent manager. |
| How fast does a click respond? | 16 ms | Joint fastest of 6 Cookie Control integrations | Reject responded in 16 ms. Under 200 ms feels instant. |
| Does it block trackers until consent? | 3 of 4 checks passed. We could not check the other 1 | Joint 1st of 6 Cookie Control integrations by checks passed | We could not confirm 1 of 4 checks either way. |

## Mobile

Mobile (emulated) profile: 390 × 844, DPR 3 · Mid-tier phone CPU (4× slowdown) · 200 KB/s, 150 ms latency.

In our tests with its Astro integration, Cookie Control showed its cookie banner in a median 1.94 s on an emulated mid-tier phone. It delayed the main content by 496 ms (95% interval 488 ms to 504 ms). Accept responded in 24 ms and Reject in 24 ms. It held trackers back in 3 of 4 consent checks. ## Questions about Cookie Control

### How fast is Cookie Control’s cookie banner?

On desktop, it appeared in a median 385 ms, against 471 ms for the median of the 10 CMPs measured. On an emulated mid-tier phone, it appeared in a median 2.47 s, against 2.71 s for the median of the 10 CMPs measured.

### Does Cookie Control slow down the page?

On desktop it added no measurable delay to the main content. On an emulated mid-tier phone it delayed the main content by 492 ms (95% interval 484 ms to 504 ms). Delay is the extra time before the main content appears. We compare Largest Contentful Paint on the same page, with and without a consent manager.

### Does Cookie Control block trackers before consent?

It passed 3 of 4 checks on desktop and on an emulated mid-tier phone. We could not confirm the other check. A check fails if a tracker runs, the page sets a cookie or data leaves the page before the visitor chooses.

### Does Cookie Control support IAB TCF and IAB GPP?

Per vendor docs, Cookie Control supports IAB TCF, Google Consent Mode v2, Google CMP certification and Global Privacy Control. We could not confirm IAB GPP. Feature support comes from Cookie Control’s documentation. CookieBench did not test these features itself.
